grooming to you. welcome to "mornings on -- garning 20 you. i'm dave clark -- good morning to you. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's tuesday, july 5th. mike martin vanished on saturday possibly while on 5 bike ride. just a short time ago, allie rasmus spoke to the missing man's girlfriend. >> reporter: good morning. the friends and family of 9- year-old mike martin believe -- 9-year-old mike martin believe he may have gone on a bike ride. you can see there are a number of bicyclists getting ready to start their morning ride. the reason why his family says

this is where they believe he went is because another biker found his cell phone on the side of the road. that was more than two days ago. martin has not been seen since saturday afternoon. mike martin is 9 years old, he's 6 feet tall with brown hair and brown eyes. now, when we spoke to his girlfriend, she said she's also concerned because she found out that martin had recently been doing some search on how to fast and do juice die diets. >> if he was going down a windy road at the pace that he usually does, and he physically couldn't take it, he may have went over the side. >> he was last seen riding a fluorescent green and white

road bike. his girlfriend also told us. he used to be a pro al sookleist -- professional cyclist. his family, again, is very concerned, they've not seen him or heard from him since saturday. even in who may have seen someone fitting the description we may have given you is asked to call berkeley police. live in the oakland hills, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:03. just about an hour ago, oakland firefighters put out an early- morning fire. now, this one started shortly after 5:30 on 45th avenue near international boulevard. newschopper2 was flying over the scene just a couple of minutes later. look at this. this fire gutted several cars in an outside lot. the crews managed to keep the flames away from nearby homes. the crews closed down the surrounding streets for a while. still not clear how that fire

began. firefighters were busy overnight in contra costa county fighting several grass fires. tara moriarty is live in bay point to talk about why the fire danger may not be over. >> that's right. the conditions are still hot and dry in this area. we are here off of port chicago highway near driftwood and if you take take a look across the street. you can see the damage that was done by a wildfire last night. it spans all the way down the roadway here. it's charred black. crews from contra costa county fire and several agencies battled the fire. they spread out over a mile in different directions. one fire threaten the building off port chicago highway. witnesses tell us young kids were lighting fireworks. >> there are a lot of fireworks

out. our fire marshals are out trying to determine what the cause of the fires are. but we don't have safe and sane fireworks in the county. they are illegal. that's one of the reasons is to try to make sure we won't have these types of fires. >> reporter: now, crews put out another fire along solano avenue near willow pass road. drivers and bistanders could see the flames and thick smoke. fire frills say they had to -- officials say they had to shut down some roads while they got this under control. as we mentioned, the conditions out here are still very windy. as you can see everything is kind of blowing around here in the field. still extremely dry as you can tell. this will just fall right through your hands. so obviously still in fire season and a long way to go. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. it was a frightening wakeup call for two families in brentwood. the fire started about:30 this morning between two homes on

tradition way. it started creeping up the sides of both of the houses. everyone inside got out safely but one family had just move in the three weeks ago after fire damaged a previous house. >> there was an electrical fire in the roof. it partially burned down and we had to move out completely and live in a hotel for a while. but this time we may get the house right back. >> it says firefighters got their quick. they had the fire out in a couple of minutes. investigators are checking to see if a barbecue in between the two homes may have started the fire. 7:06. a registered sex offender is behind bars after police say he broke into a san rafael hotel room and raped her. san rafael police arrested 33- year-old indigo williams yesterday on rain, sodomy and burglary charges. investigator 1s say the woman left the door at the hotel slightly open and that allowed

williams to enter her room. officials are warning residents ar two bus stop muggings in one week. the latest happened around 11:00 saturday night. the victim was approached by two men in sweat shuts. one was armed. the victim gave them his backpacks. in another case, the gun was not visible but the victim was injured and needed treatment. a fire starts in southern california with a teenager accused of murdering another student during a morning computer class in ventura

class. 17-year-old mcnortheasternny was only -- mcnearny was only 14 at the time. it is 7:07. the nation's largest teachers' union voted to adopt a new policy 245 will hold teachers more accountable. for the first time, the national education association is calling for student learning and performance to be part of teacher evaluations. the n.e.a. says it starts state use of standardized tests to grade teachers as long as the tests are of proven high quality. tonight, mountain view city council is set to vote on agreements with two of its union groups under the deals those workers will -- will forgo cost of living increases along with merit raises and will have to pay for more doctor visits. but the agreements will give them a couple of more days of

time off. the concessions are expected to save the city $500,000. the city of oakland is being criticized this morning for what's being called a budget trick. now, it involves selling the jenrry j. kaiser -- henry j. kaiser convention center. as part of the -- center as part of the budget. however, some are calling this some sort of a budget manic trick and say this won't erase long - -- this won't erase long- term plans. we want to check in with sal now. we're gonna start with -- tori is magic. there's slow traffic in milpitas on 37, crossing 880. someone e-mailed me and told me that, you know, you might see some more trailer and truck

traffic on 37 these days because the axled vehicles or more, those fees, have gone up. let's move along and take a look at 880 northbound and southbound. that traffic is moving along nicely. international boulevard has developed up after earlier problems near 45th. the morning commute, the toll plaza, is not all that heavy, it's backed up for about a 5, 10-minute delay. i would say this a pretty decent commute. let's go to steve. sunshine. fog is on the coast. very shallow, very shallow. >> it's going up the coast. it's not making a push inland yet but it will in about 36 to 48 hours. if you are inland, it will be warm to hot. but that cooler sea breeze is trying 20 establish itself. warm to hot away from the

coast. westerly breeze, even though it's very weak right now. 60s to 90s. cool to mild to nice to warm to hot. some tropical clouds continue to fire up. now, if the high kept building in, we might have to talk about that coming up in our direction. but i don't think it will -- it will make much progress. but the fog is. you can see it's out there. it's trying to get its act together, run moog a lot of resistance in the form of high pressure giving us an inversion. it cools and then warms rapidly. there's very warm air, around 2,000 feet up. so below that we have a lot of os. fairfield, concord, livermore, san jose, we saw just an hour ago, and the temperatures are on the rise now. 5 in san francisco. west-southwest at fairfield and a west 8 at sfo. so what's not much. we need that to be 15, 20 if you want cooler weather. it will get here. even though the fog is there it

will -- it will only impact those by the bay. the system there, there it is, that will start to move into the pacific northwest. that will usher in a cool pattern. the cooling trend is -- heading down over the next few days, the weekend will just level off. fog, a lot of sun. west breeze is there. emphasis on breeze, not wind. so os to 1998. >> a lot of fog means upper 50s, low 60s on parts of the

roadside bombing killed at least 35 people. an additional 47 others were hurt. this is the latest in the series of the insurgent attacks as the iraqi government is deciding whether to ask the u.s. to leave behind some of the american troops past their year-end withdrawal dead line. there are big concerns about what will happen with the remaining 47,000 american troops pull -- when the remaining 47,000 american troops pull out. the u.s. senate returns to washington, d.c. they've cancelled their holiday recess to resume the -- to resume the intense negotiations. an catastrophe is looming and so are changes to medicare. scott macfarlane has more. >> reporter: the white house is ready to offer tens of billions of dollars in cuts to medicare and medicaid to push these negotiations along. "the new york times" reporting that those cuts would squeeze government payments to hospital

campaign appearance in new hampshire. romney said in the 2008 presidential election, the country elected a nice fellow who we didn't know very well. >> there were some people in that last campaign who said i wonder what will happen as we elect as a president someone who doesn't have any experience. now we know. that's not so good. >> for the record, president obama was a state senator in illinois for almost eight years before becoming a united states senator in 2005. well, today the san francisco parks trust will get a gift from the coca-cola company. coke plans 20 donate $250,000 to the organization. that money is expected to be used to build a new trail in golden gate park and spruce up the corner of the park. the ceremony will take place at 10:00 this morning. today is stage four of the tour de france. look at this, real close, first stage. ouch! this was saturday.

huge crash. now, someone watching on the side of the road got too close to the cyclist. can you see it there? that caused that chain reaction crash. one of the riders brought down was defending champ, alberto. he lost about a minute of his time but the crash didn't cause, believe it or not, any major injuries. ferrar won yesterday to become the first american to win a tour stage on the 4th of july. another baseball superstar goes on trial tomorrow on felony charges tied to steroids. roger clemens is due in a washington, d.c. croom -- d.c. courtroom today. prosecutors say he lied under oath when he said he never used steroids. he's charged with felony and five other counts. he could go to prison if convicted. federal prosecutors are deciding whether to retry barry

bonds on similar charges. a writer in fans says she will file a complaint today accusing dominique strauss-kahn of trying to rape her eight years ago. currently, dominique strauss- kahn is free on bail in new york after questions arose about the credibility of a hotel mate who accused him of sexual assault. the writer in france said strauss-kahn attacked her when she was interviewing him for a book. attorneys for strauss-kahn have just announced they plan to file a slander complaint about the writer. 7:20. well, some trouble for the bay area's crown jewel. why some who visited the golden gate bridge for the 4th of july had some less-than-flattering things to say about it. and why some squatters were -- got in a lot of trouble for trying to leave an apartment in san francisco. if you are drive whying on the -- driving on the

a group of squatters is occupying a building in the mission district. a chaotic scene broke out last night when police officers showed up. >> hey! hey! >> police arrested one man last night and charged him with resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer. hese part of 5 group called homes, not jails. they have taken over a building on 250th -- 0th and mission street -- 0th and mission street. >> we get this to get the word out that houses are sitting vacant and weep say we don't have the resource -- and people say we don't have the resources to house them in san francisco. but -- but there's places like

this. it was a bit chaotic walking across the golden gate bridge yesterday, especially with the western sidewalk closed. walkers had to share the eastern path with bikers who would normally be riding on the western side. now, they plan to keep the area closed. in the meantime, there are plans to paint a stripe down the middle of the sidewalk to divide the pedestrians and the bicyclists. how do you think that's gonna work? >> i don't know. sounds like a recipe for a disaster. kind of complicated. okay, sal. you made me sound like i was telepathic. there is a form here. >> right. i put them in here so the crews know what we're going to see.

this morning -- a pretty good job -- our directors -- let's go to highway 237. by the way, directors i'm gonna ask you guys to put up a map because i just found out about something. 237 does look slow. the traffic is going to be a little bit slow here on 0 but not all that bad. the morning commute is pretty typically slow here. so it actually looks better than it normally does. if you are driving on the bay bridge approach, that looks good. now, we just found out about an accident. i'm gonna put it on the maps here. west 80 in pinole valley road. this one just came in, one of the vehicles is engulfed in flames. now the fire is out according 209 fire department who just got there and kind of sprayed the car down. traffic is backed up for a good long way on 80. you can see the road sensors

overnight several small grass fires in contra costa county caused some tense moments for firefighters. tara moriarty is live in bay point with what the conditions are like this morning. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. conditions are hot, winy and dry, as you can see -- windy and dry, as you can see by this brush. we're here off port chicago highway and driftwood. if you take a look across the street, you can see where all of the damage caused by last night's fire is. it's just charred black and witnesses say fireworks are to blame. flames broke out around 9:30 last night. crews from contra costa county fire and several other agencies battled the flames until midnight. firefighters were chasing at least three good-sized wildfires. spread out over a mile in

different directions. one firefighter threatened buildings off port chicago highway. >> we're here off port chicago and bill low pass, we had a vegetation fire that extended into a garage off an apartment building and affected several apartment buildings. >> translator: because of the distress. i don't know. >> reporter: crews put out another fire along solano avenue near willow pass road. fire officials say they had to shut down roads in the area while they got the flames under control. other fires near pittsburgh also slowed rail service. investigators have not commented other than that. a fire at a red robin restaurant is being flamed on a hot grease fire.

this happened at san jose's east ridge mall. the fire was contained 20 the kitchen. they put it out in a fire. luckily no one was hurt during that incident. in pleasant hill, a fire was responsible for damaging two houses. this one started before 1:30 yesterday moving. the fire then spread to the home next door. luckily no one was hurt. the woman who lived in the house said her home was burglarized just a month ago, she had just finished replacing her stolen property. a huge crowd enjoyed a spectacular 4th of july fireworks show on san francisco's waterfront. [ cheers ] >> this year it was a rare fog- free show. tens of thousands of people enjoyed an awesome fireworks display under clear, sum #er skies. everybody agreed it was a great way to celebrate america's

birthday. >> the fireworks really do it for you. every time you look at them you see freedom and sparks in life you want. >> the waterfront is one of the few places left in the bay area where you can still enjoy a big show. several cities have cancelled their shows due to budget cutbacks. there were plenty of illegal fireworks being set off around the bay area last night. >> this is what it looked like in one community in san jose. it's been a tradition to set off fireworks every year. but the law says anything that supplies into the sky or explodes is illegal. san jose's police chief says due to recent budget cuts, they just don't have the resources 20 crack down on this activity. the most practical approach from our perspective is an educational campaign. i tell people, 24 is dangerous -- dangerous. you could lose your fingers or our eyes. >> police and firefighters went out to various areas as well as

schools trying 20 get their message across to young people. and imlegal fireworks also lit up the sky in an east bay. our camera spotted this display on skyline boulevard in oakland around 9:00. later this month, a public hearing will be held to settle a dispute over replacing the headstones of several russian sailors at an historic bay area cemetery. the russian consulate general replaced the headstones with new ones at the mare island cemetery. these headstones date back to 1863. city officials say the new headstones were placed there without the proper permits. a public hearing will be held on july 21st. a sonoma county dive team

recovered the body of a man. he was able to help his girlfriend get into a kayak that kime out to rescue them -- that came out to rescue them but he sank below the surface and crowned -- drowned. for weeks there have been warnings over the rivers. and over the weekend, seven bay area rafters learned 3 that the hard way. >> big drop. >> this video is from the helmet cameras of two of the rafters. all seven were flipped into the water of the american river and swept downstream. >> that question just crossed my mind. this is not the way. is this gonna be the way that i go?

to these crime rings. a man from nevada is facing possible murder charges after authorities say he shot and killed 5 man who stole his solar lights. "the sacramento bee" reports a man caught three in the act before they escaped 2349 getaway. the man started to chase them down the street in hit truck. 7:37. volunteers are gearing up for today's star-sprangled beach cleanup along the monterey bay. as it has in years past, save our shores is hosting the event on the day after the 4th of july weekend. the cleanup begins at 8:00 a.m. at davenport, moran lakes, marin crowell, among others.

all cleanup materials will be provided. any extra help would be appreciated. hey, sal, we have a sig- alert. what happened? >> that's right. on interstate 80, dave and tori, westbound 80 at pinole valley road. this crash is blocking the two left lanes and right now the traffic is backing up onto the carquinez bridge because of this multi-vehicle injury crash. one car was on fire at one point. the fire department did manage to clear one of the other lanes but still very slow. if you use 80 coming out of the vallejo this morning, the ultimate route is 780 to 6 0 and then you can get on highway 4 and go west or you can go on 688 and use 24. let's go to the toll plaza. it will start to get lighter. it's getting lighter at the toll plaza.

the turn toward point reyes. it's way down here. all right. way down here. not up here. not clearing the hills. so it can't make much of an impact inland. already mid-60s for some. away from the coast, you have 52 in san francisco. 50s for santa rosa, napa and san rafael at 58. a little bit starting to show up on the vis -- visible satellite. it's past point reyes heading towards bodega bay. fog for some. it's very shallow. very thick, very low. maybe a little drizzly if you are in it. if not, you already have sun. 2 will be warm to hot.

last week, the dow rose 648 points, the best week in two years and this morning, the commerce department just reported an increase in factory orders. but right now stocks are wavering a little bit after the dow had its best week in two years. part of the reason, the volume is expected low. 7:45. los gatos-based netflix is getting ready for an international exten 1 pantion. >> the company announced this morning -- international extension. right now netflix is only available in the united states

and canada. they plan to offer its services in 43 new countries. there are several new lawsuits against some 69 country's biggest banks over mortgage modification agreements. in one, bank of america is accused of sending account statements with inaccurate loan balances after modifying a mortgage. in another, a woman said she was denied 5 mortification that citi mortgage had already approved. the suits are the newest waves against complaints that have gone through years of criticism for reluctant to modify loans. the machine in charge of rebidding efforts in japan -- rebuilding efforts in japan could be on his way out. critics of the -- of the country see the remarks as -- remark as cold and arrogant.

accident in beijing. now, the escalator was going up but then suddenly reversed. more than 020 people on that escalator -- 20 people on that escalator tumbled down. at least 30 people were hurt, including the young man's father. two mudslides really bad ones, severely damaged a major highway in china. they were triggered by several days of heavy rains. the nearby residents, they've already been evacuated. this particular damaged highway was a very important lifeline during a major earthquake three years ago that killed thousands of people. a man in wisconsin fell to his death while trying to escape a stuck elevator. police in milwaukee say two people were stuck in the elevator of an apartment building last night. they pried open the door on the 12th and 14th floors. the 41-year-old man tried to jump down to the 1th floor but

lost his footing and fell down the elevator shaft. heart disease is the number one killer of women. in a new report, it says the symptoms are hard to detect. the report by cardiologists says symptoms of heart disease in women don't show up in standard tests but there needs to be better ways to protect -- detect problems because women are more likely to die in the year after their first heart attack. the report says most health- related studies, still don't focus enough on women. still ahead -- a federal agent killed by guns that were sold to known traffickers. we'll have a live report as the agent's family talks about who they want held account an for this very -- accountable for this very controversial operation. and why this newborn stands out from the herd.

allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. new information, we just received more information and video of an early-morning fire in oakland. it started shortly after 5:00 a.m. on 45th avenue near international boulevard. investigators now say illegal fireworks may be to blame. our ktvu news crew took these pictures giving us a closer look at the damage. the fire gutted several cars parked in the outside lot. crews managed to keep the flames away. but firefighters as i faced some big challenges. we spoke to a -- to an oakland battalion chief just a short time ago. possible fireworks combined with dry brush caused a pretty dangerous situation in contra costa county overnight. tara moriarty is live in bay
